The Best Player in the NBA Draft (NOBODY is Talking About): Mason Jones

29-Mar, 2020

The best scorer in this year's draft isn't one that you'll see at the top of mock drafts. His name won't be tossed around debates on ESPN. In fact, you might not even see any headlines when an NBA team decides to take a chance on him. Mason Jones is one of the least talked about prospects in this year's draft, despite being the Co-SEC Player of the Year and showcasing a skill-set that is as polished as stars like James Harden and Bradley Beal. Today, I'm going to take a look at the player that I feel is the best kept secret of the 2020 NBA Draft, and explain why even though you don't know Mason Jones name right now...soon you will.

  • Hopefully harden stays because he’d be the best mentor for Jones

  • Wow, the Rockets just found James Harden' clone!!! And in one of his interviews, he said he modeled his game after Harden, EXTENSIVELY!! His step-backs and everything else is Harden-equs. He just need time to hone ihis craft in. Sharpen his dribble skills and keep his footwork more crisp like Harden. Not, making it too wild and kicky-like but quick and crsip when stepping back.

  • He doesn't run fast and he doesn't jump high but he can play. One athletic trait that he does possess is strength and he uses it very well. He's really good at driving and drawing contact. He gets to the free throw line a TON. I just kinda wish he was 6'8 instead of 6'5. He could use those extra inches in the NBA. I'm hoping he has a long wingspan to help make up for the lack of height/hops/quickness. I wouldn't take him extremely high just because there are several questions about how his game translates. But if I could get him in the early second round I'd do it.

    • @1 Survivor Not only that, Im starting to see Rafael Stone (Rockets' GM) way of picking talents which is way better than Morey'. Stone actually go after good players with either a deft skll-set or athelic. Morey went after mostly left-handed sturdy types that looks like Football players or a delivery guy.. So, that's a welcoming change! I like the Mason Jones/Brodric signing....those guys look good to develope and would give us a deep bench once we trade Harden and Russ for starting caliber players and have a deep bench by mid-season for the upcoming season or next.

      JudahJudah8 kun oldin
    • @Judah He was a nice pick up for the Rockets. I can't believe he wasn't drafted. Teams really out think themselves sometimes.

      1 Survivor1 Survivor8 kun oldin
    • Dude, if he was 6'8, there is no way in the world he'd be able to dribble and do step-backs like that. His game looks ALOT like Harden', and Im a Rockets fan so we would know a Harden' clone when we see one. And that guy even modeled after Harden' game. He said so, as well.

      JudahJudah8 kun oldin
    • Depends on how hard he wants to work defensively. If he can figure out how to run an offense and be disciplined defensively, he could be a lethal guard for a long time in this league.

    • how can i look this up?

      CRCR3 kun oldin
    • @Brian Schroeder Naw, his foot work and shot is more authentic than Luka' but Luka is the better player right now. Mason' gsme looks way more like Harden!

      JudahJudah8 kun oldin
    • He has alot of similarities to Luka in his game, especially the way he creates shots and get past people even without being as physically gifted.

      TriceTrice8 oy oldin
    • @Trice not to say he's Luka, but he has Luka's layup package lol

    • That's a great comparison!

      TriceTrice8 oy oldin
  • I bet he is a top 20 players come next year (much like FVV and Terrance Davis). Look at his stats, than look at James Harden's/Spencer Dinwiddie's/Eric Gordon's/FVV's and you will see this kid comps very well to them. Especially since he can create his own shot, has a high af FT%/3PT%, and can get to the ft line whenever he wants. I mean, the kid had a higher FTR than James Harden in college and that is one thing that always translates, fearlessness of contact, and shooting.

    stopidvideosstopidvideos8 oy oldin
    • @stopidvideos Yes he could. ex: He would be a perfect 6th man for the Wizards who needs bench scoring from the Guard position. But put him on the Celtics and he wont be seeing any PT. Thing with Jones is that he plays the game just as aggressive as he is in practice, thats a skill.

Water Melon Sugar HighWater Melon Sugar High7 oy oldin
    • @Water Melon Sugar High Yeah but that goes for all those players not just him, and put him with the right coaching staff+team and dude could do really well imo.

      stopidvideosstopidvideos7 oy oldin
    • @stopidvideos Sadly everything is about fit with these late 1st-early second round picks! Wrong fit, wrong coach etc = out of the league in 2-3 years!

Water Melon Sugar HighWater Melon Sugar High7 oy oldin
    • Yeah I really feel like Jones is one of the most NBA-ready prospects in this class.

      TriceTrice8 oy oldin
    • @Trice tbh I got him and Killian Tillie ranked above RJ Hampton, Isaac Okoro, Jaden Mcdaniels, Vernon Carey, Cassius Stanley, Isaiah Stewart, Nico Mannion and Josh Green. They're my sleeper picks for this draft if they get drafted by the right team.

  • Still should have stayed. Final four team for sure if he stayed. Would have been first team all American then been a lottery pick. With summer league probably not happing this year the extra time would have been good

    Payton DunnPayton Dunn8 oy oldin
    • Also add that the 2021 draft class is a lot stronger than 2020. In the 2021 class You have 5 players that could go 1st in the 2020 class.

Water Melon Sugar HighWater Melon Sugar High7 oy oldin
    • @Mark Shelby I agree! The makeup of next year's team would not allow him the statistical year he had this year. He may have to play his way in through the G-League but he will no doubt end up on an NBA roster.

      Steven RogersSteven Rogers7 oy oldin
    • @Steven Rogers, I'm a Razorback fan through and through, been one since 1958. Jones is a great talent and even though I'd rather see him stay another year for selfish reasons, he made the right decision by coming out this year. This incoming class for Arkansas is loaded, and although Arkansas will be young, Musselman will soon have this team back where they belong, playing for conference championships and competing for National Titles. Jones is not as physically gifted as many would like, but he's got that "it" factor that you want on a team. He'll make it on an NBA roster.

      Mark ShelbyMark Shelby7 oy oldin
    • They have 4 top 100 players coming in plus 3 transfers. His PT would not be what it was (35+ per game) last year. He made the right choice.
